Stay Warm Sustainably: Discover the Best Reusable Hand & Foot Warmers to Keep You Warm this Winter

No more coming in from the cold due to tingly hands and feet. Here is everything you need to know about Aurora Heat hand and foot warmers, and why I think they should be a staple for your household this winter!

I hate to say it, but I used to hate going outside in the winter. I am a person who is always cold and I also work outside in the winter- so in my spare time, I wanted to be inside and cozy warm. I felt like this was rubbbing off on my kids a little bit, so last year I said no more. Being from Saskatchewan, most of our year is winter. We are Canadian, and we needed to do some outdoor activities to make the winter sneak by faster. So I made a goal to do 1000 hours outside (more on that later), bought our family some good base layers and I came across Aurora Heat. Our entire family – my two young daughters (2 and 5 at the time), my husband and myself used Aurora Heat hand and foot warmers for an entire winter. Below is my review and some common questions I get asked about them.

Researching good base layers and gear for us and our kids was no problem. Having great baselayers and gear is a must for spending time outside in our Canadian winters. Although, it seemed for us that no matter how great of quality our gloves were or how warm our wool socks were- hands and feet are the first to get cold even when you’re moving around doing activities like skating and skiing. We’ve always just stopped our activity to come in and warm up (and we usually didn’t get back outside) or used the disposable type warmers. And if you know me, you know I hate single use products!

I was so happy to find Aurora Heat. Aurora Heat is a Canadian and Indigenous owned company from the Northwest Territories. Brenda Dragon, the president & founder of Aurora Heat grew up as an outdoorsy kid in temperatures that dipped to -40°C, but she was never cold. Her parents dressed her in mittens, moccasins and parkas made out of wild fur.

Brenda says that she ‘dreams of a world where humans are thoughtful about meeting basic needs, using natural and reusable products. Where natural fur is the first choice for warmth, replacing single-use products, fast-fashion and synthetic/petroleum based materials‘.

Let’s talk some frequently asked questions about the warmers that I use and ultimately, how well I think they work!

What type of fur is used?

These hand warmers are made from sustainably harvested beaver fur. Beavers reproduce in large litters and overpopulation is common. Fur harvesters play an active role in maintaining the balance in populations and cultivating abundance for beavers. The trapping season is monitored by the government and fur harvesters use certified humane traps.

If you know me, you know I don’t particularly like animals dying. However, it is a part of nature and as a wildlife biologist I know the implications if wildlife populations aren’t managed correctly. Harvesters never take more than the ecosystem can replenish naturally. Fur bearer conservation is deeply important and beavers are a thriving species.

Is the rest of the beaver wasted?

Indigenous natural law respects and honours all relationships. Brenda Dragon (Aurora Heat founder) says that ‘at the end of the day, there is no garbage in their bin. They use all parts of our pelts in deep respect and gratitude to the land and to Tsa, the beaver‘.

The beaver meat is either consumed by humans for nourishment or brought back to the trapline for other animals in the forest. All other parts of the beaver are used as well.

How are they made?

Aurora Heat offers flexible work for Indigenous artisans. The handmade production of these warmers has a very low impact on the environment. The beaver warmers are long lasting, natural and biodegradable which makes for a circular supply chain at the end of their life- however you will be using these warmers for years to come. Your order is shipped to you from northern Canada in minimal, plastic free packaging.

How warm are they, really?

SO WARM!

As you know, our hands and feet are normally the first to get chilly when we are outside, so I couldn’t wait to try the Aurora Heat hand and feet warmers. They are easy to use and like all their warmers, you basically just put them where you need the warmth. Whether that is on top of your hand or foot, or surrounding your toes and fingers. These completely changed the game for me in how long I could stay outside for. I keep the hand warmers inside my gloves daily and put the feet warmers in my socks (around my toes) if we are playing outside with the kids for an extended period.

Naturally, I want my kids to be warm. I hate when we get them all geared up and get outside, just for them to say their toes are cold ten minutes later. If you’re a parent, you know what I am talking about. That in itself is a reason to buy these warmers!

Once I realized how well these worked, I got hand and foot warmers for my daughters. They couldn’t get over how soft they were on their skin, and how warm they kept them. Last winter we were able to have so many full day adventures where we packed a lunch and went cross country skiing, snow-shoeing and skating- without needing a warmup every half hour (and a lot less complaining!).

And they’re reusable?

Yes! No more need for those disposable, single use packet hand or foot warmers. You know the kind you activate, put in your mitts/boots and then throw out once their done?

There is no shaking or twisting needed to activate the Aurora Heat warmers. Simply put them inside your mitts or socks. They also have different types of body warmers that you can put anywhere you need warmth. Aurora Heat even has a cell phone warmer to keep your cell phone working in those cold conditions – this would be great for someone who works outside or spends their days on the hill!

These warmers are natural, biodegradable and long lasting. Investing in these will change your winter and save you money. No more needing to remember to buy boxes of disposable warmers!

And they give back too!

One dollar from every purchase is contributed to On-the-Land initiatives for children and youth, educators and Indigenous knowledge holders. Contributions go to the Children and Nature Alliance of Canada, Bushkids NWT and Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning.
