Welcome to the BLOG

I think its time I reintroduced myself.

My name is Launne Kolla (you probably figured that out by now since you somehow arrived at launnekolla.ca, ha!) And you might be wondering, who am I to have a website with my name in it?

Well, I run Do More Good, a social media page focused on helping people to live more sustainably. The domain Do More Good has already been taken, so that is how I ended up here.

Ok, so lets circle back. If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know I am a bit of a rambler:)

I’m Launne. I usually tell people it’s pronounced ‘Lawn, like the grass’. That way I don’t get every guess under the sun. I am a wildlife and marine biologist in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I know, I know. A marine biologist in SK? But hey, you can fly for work. I’ve worked on projects throughout Western Canada and in the territories, as well as on wildlife projects off the coast of Cuba and in the Peruvian Amazon. My job has allowed me lots of amazing opportunities and travel! Travelling is also something I am super passionate about. I love either backcountry hiking in the mountains or backpacking somewhere adventurous in the world. I can’t wait to showcase more of that on this website.

I have been married for ten years to my wonderful husband Dillon, who is a constant supporter of all my crazy ideas and is often the man behind the camera. We have two beautiful little girls, Ruby who is 5 and Polly who is 2. We also have a dog named Kathy and two cats, Frank and Susan. We are one busy, hairy household.

But- lets get into the meat and potatoes of why I started this site. As a little girl, I fell in love with animals. I saw a manatee and learnt that they were an endangered species and that changed the game for me. From there on, I dedicated my livelihood to conservation. In 2018, I saw the photo of a sea turtle with a straw up its nose that went viral. Instantly, I decided I wanted to go zero waste. I took a deep dive into the problem of plastic pollution and vowed to get rid of all the plastic in my life.

From my research and learning, I still don’t have it all figured out. But what I do know is that sustainability is nuanced, it has a lot of gray areas. It isn’t black and white. Most importantly, zero waste doesn’t exist. It’s impossible. Most of the time there isn’t a perfect solution and you just have to do what is best for you, making small little changes where you can. Maybe your a vegetarian but you fly everywhere. Maybe you take public transit, but waste a lot of food. Maybe a product you buy looks sustainable, but in actuality it is greenwashing.

This is why I’m here. I started Do More Good as a place where people could come and ask their questions, without judgement. I will never think you are silly for not knowing the answer and would never shame you for having plastic on hand! My house has plastic too! I want to be your go-to trusted resource and if I don’t know the answer, I’ll do my best to find the correct one. This blog will be my place to go a bit more deeper into a subject than the space of a Instagram caption.

Perfection doesn’t exist. If we strive for perfection, we will become overwhelmed. And I don’t know about you but I’ve been there, I’m there a lot actually and I don’t want that. We don’t need everyone doing it perfectly, we need a lot of people doing it imperfectly. I truly believe that many small changes can turn into a large positive impact. And since the earth is on fire, we might as well try our best.

Most of all, I don’t want sustainability to be hard. I want to have fun. We can conquer our problems and celebrate our wins while having a laugh together.

Sooooo…thanks for being here. It truly means the world to me. I am so grateful to everyone who follows along here or on social media. The more people we can get to join the sustainability movement, the more great things we can accomplish together.

Keep Doing More Good,

Launne
